Bruton School for Girls ScienceLocal schoolgirls will experiment with science at two hugely popular and oversubscribed ‘Girls in Science’ events hosted by Bruton School for Girls this month.

The school’s Science Department will be running an exciting day of workshops to demonstrate to girls that science is for them.

A recent Institute of Physics report shows that girls from single sex schools are almost 2.5 times more likely to study Physics at A Level than girls who attend co-ed schools in the maintained sector.

At Bruton School for Girls nearly a fifth of A Level students take Physics and over half are studying one science at A Level, with many going on to study medicine and science related careers.

Pupils from schools across Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire have booked to attend the popular events, which will feature activities in Biology, Physics and Chemistry, with almost 150 girls taking part. Girls will also find out about opportunities for further study and careers in science.

Mrs Nicola Botterill, Headmistress of Bruton School for Girls said ‘It is vitally important that girls are encouraged to take what are sometimes seen as stereotypically male subjects, and in all-girls’ schools there is much less stereotyping.

Choosing physics, science or maths in a co-ed school is often seen as a brave choice, where girls are hugely outnumbered in those classes, as they are at the age when don’t want to do anything that will make them look different and are very keen to fit in with their peer group.

Bruton School for Girls encourages pupils to have faith in their abilities and challenge existing preconceptions in an age where creative thinking linked with science and technology is vital.’
