BLACK HOLES AT BRUTON SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

An Oxford University Professor of Astrophysics gave a talk at Bruton School for Girls last week to kick-off the school’s Science Week.

Professor Katherine Blundell, a Research Fellow of St John’s College, Oxford and a former Research Fellow of the Royal Society, specialises in black holes. Her research interests include relativistic jets, astrophysical plasmas and the evolution of quasars and microquasars.

Professor Blundell spoke to GCSE Physics students, taking them through amazing computer graphics of microquasars (small black holes) showing the gases that jet out from their centres and enthusing pupils with her amusing and accessible explanations.

Lower Sixth students were challenged by the Professor to think about the part they can play in shaping the decisions made by our country in deciding what fuels to use in the future.

Headmaster, John Burrough, said ‘We were very fortunate to have such an eminent scientist visit the school. Teachers and students alike were enthused and inspired by her excellent talks on these important issues. Professor Blundell is a great role-model for the girls.’
