Bruton School for Girls - Sculpture of polar bearMark Coreth, master sculptor of animals in motion, hosted an inspirational talk at Bruton School for Girls on Sunday 29 April, entitled ‘A Sculptural Adventure’.

One hundred and fifty people attended the event which focussed on Mark Coreth’s visit to Baffin Island in 2007 in search of polar bears to sculpt in their own environment. The visit had a profound effect on Mark, a committed conservationist, and convinced him of the role that art has to play in raising awareness of the environmental issues facing this magnificent beast, and indeed others.

During the presentation Mark explained his work as a backpack sculptor, revealing the essential contents of his well-travelled rucksack. The audience was shown a film of his Arctic adventure, which lead to the Ice Bear Project – the creation of a massive ice sculpture of a polar bear. The Ice Bear project has featured in 6 major cities round the world, at venues that include UN Climate Change Conferences. Mark’s objective is to spread awareness of climate change through the visual medium of sculpture.

Alongside the film, the audience was invited to watch first-hand as Mark demonstrated his considerable skills creating a clay sculpture of a polar bear.

Headmaster of Bruton School for Girls, John Burrough, said ‘Art and environmental issues are two important aspects of life at Bruton School, so we were delighted to be able to host this inspiring talk. Mark was able to inform, educate and entertain, whilst revealing his immense talent for sculpting. It was a memorable afternoon and much appreciated.”
