BRUTON SCHOOL FOR GIRLS PUPIL VISITS NEW YORK FOR 9/11 ANNIVERSARY

A pupil at Bruton School for Girls pupil travelled to New York for the 11th anniversary of 9/11 after entering a national essay-writing competition.

Harriet meets Mayor of New York14 year old, Harriet Sheves of Warminster wrote an essay on how 9/11 had changed the world and finished runner-up in the 9/11 Education Programme’s competition for 14 to 16 year olds. Harriet was presented with her prize at the American Embassy in London.

On 8th September, Harriet flew to New York where she met Mayor Rudy Guiliani, who was mayor of New York City at the time of the attacks on the World Trade Center. There was also the opportunity to visit the 9/11 Tribute which proved extremely moving, taking the visitor through the timeline of events on that day. Harriet also saw the 9/11 Memorial and met the Head of the New York Fire Department and families of the victims.

Harriet said of her trip ‘It was a very moving visit but I left with a feeling of hope that through education something positive could come out of this terrible tragedy.’

Headmistress of Bruton School for Girls, Mrs Nicola Botterill said ‘This was a fantastic achievement for Harriet, especially as the other winners were Sixth Formers – it is a testament to her empathy, understanding and intellectual curiosity, and she thoroughly deserves this once in a lifetime opportunity.’
