‘WORTHY OF THE WEST END’ – BRUTON SCHOOL FOR GIRLS’ ‘PYGMALION’

‘The vibrant opening’ and ‘the clever use of film’ were just some of the comments from the appreciative audiences after Bruton School for Girls’ summer production of ‘Pygmalion’.

Bruton School for Girls - star of PygmalionHead of Drama, Mrs Rebecca Hurstwaite, cast pupils from across the school in an innovative production of George Bernard Shaw’s famous play, which saw girls carry off the male roles in what one audience member described as ‘inhabiting the characters so sensitively’.

Although following the script of ‘Pygmalion’, this original staging saw the opening Covent Garden scene take place as street theatre in a courtyard outside the school’s Hobhouse Studio Theatre. Audience members were treated to hot toasted muffins as well as receiving real flower posies and buttonholes from Eliza whilst enjoying live violin music played by sixth form student, Aleksandra Carlyon. Once the production moved inside the action was interwoven with multimedia elements such as excerpts filmed in school.

‘Pygmalion was absolutely brilliant and worthy of the West End’ was the verdict of one member of the audience of the show that was sold out on all three nights.

Headmaster of Bruton School for Girls, John Burrough, said ‘This has been a fantastic production, Cast of Pygmaliongiving the opportunity for girls from across the school to shine on stage and to exercise their talents behind the scenes. I congratulate everyone involved and especially Rebecca Hurstwaite, whose inspirational direction and support of the girls and eye for detail made this a really professional show.’
