Bruton School for Girls children in Spelling Bee CompetitionA team of Year 7 pupils from Bruton School for Girls won the South West Regional Semi-Final of the Times Spelling Bee.

Eloise Bance of Keinton Mandeville, Lily McCarry of Charlton Musgrove, Kirsty Sadler of Bourton and Beatrice Thomas of Wincanton travelled to Cineworld in Newport, Gwent where they competed against ten teams from the South West and Wales.

The competition involves two rounds: the ‘last speller standing’ and ‘quick-fire’. Bee came second in the last speller standing, coming unstuck on ‘sciatica’. The girls were tied with another school at the end of both rounds but won in the ‘play-off’ by spelling ‘precipitate’ correctly.

The ‘Bruton Bees’ will now head off to London on 21st June 2012, where they will compete against ten other teams from around the UK in the national final at the Institute of Education, London University.

This is the second time Bruton School for Girls has reached the final in the last 3 years.

Bruton School for Girls Headmaster, John Burrough, said “Everyone at the school is delighted. Our team reached the final two years ago and to have achieved this success again is fantastic news. The four girls have done brilliantly. Accurate spelling and use of grammar continue to be of great importance in today’s world and we at Bruton School for Girls are keeping our standards high.”
