Bruton School for Girls former student lead girls in fabric paintingIt was a colourful Arts Week at Bruton School for Girls when a former student led girls in a fabric painting workshop.

Jody Myerscough-Walker, originally from Pen Selwood and a past pupil of the school, studied at Winchester College of Art and is now an up-and-coming designer. Jody has her own business Maison Myerscough that produces textiles which feature hand-drawn designs in bright colours.

Year 7 girls were treated to a workshop where Jody guided them as they produced their own hand-painted fabrics.

During this year’s celebration of the Arts pupils were also lucky to meet local author, Marie Louise Jensen. Marie Louise comes from Bath and her latest book to be published in March is entitled ‘The Girl in the Mask’. All her novels are based on historical events and, after telling the girls about her research methods, which included 6 weeks camping in Iceland, she helped pupils write the opening paragraph for a novel of their own.

Pupils also had the opportunity during Arts Week to travel to London to see the West End productions, War Horse and The Ladykillers and take part in poetry workshops.

An exciting week was brought to an end with a fancy-dress extravaganza as girls and teachers came to school dressed as their favourite book character.

Headmaster, John Burrough, said ‘Arts Week is a great Bruton School tradition, with fresh opportunities introduced each year. Jody was a welcome guest and inspired the girls to produce some fantastic designs, as well as indicating some possible career routes. Numerous other activities brought out and enhanced the creative instincts of pupils and the staff. I congratulate the organisers on a great success.’
