Rydal Penrhos budding scientistsRydal Penrhos pupils; Elinor Honeybun, 14 from Abergele and Alex Bytheway, 14 from Kinmel Bay, both of Year 10, have been awarded certificates of commendation in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC) annual Bill Bryson Prize.

The competition asks students aged 5-18 to present a creative piece of work which communicates an aspect of science which is of interest to them, whilst creating a new and innovative way in which to present the work. The entries can be comics, PowerPoint presentations, web pages or films which involve and engage their chosen audience. The entries are judged on the accuracy of the science presented, the quality of the work and the creativity of their ideas.

The Year 10 pupils were awarded a certificate for their entry where they worked together to produce a video on the benefits of nutrition in sport. The video analysed the way fats and proteins effect athletes and the duo worked on their project during their lunchtimes and evenings.

Elinor and Alex are both budding scientists who, despite only just beginning their GCSEs, are planning to study all three sciences at A-level and secure careers in the science field.
