Burgess Hill School for Girls fashion showPupils from Burgess Hill School for Girls ruled the catwalk at the Lindfield Arts Festival as they walked away with the top awards for the Catwalk Fashion Show competition for the second year running.

The girls created a range of impressive outfits based on the circus theme ‘In the Big Top’ and modelled them in the All Saint’s Church in Lindfield as part of the festival.

First place was awarded to Anne Gravesen-Hepworth (Year 9) for her Harlequin Clown dress. Second place went to Hatty Jenner and Heather Elkins (both Year 9) for their dress which featured a printed circus scene. Joint third place was given to Olivia Harding’s impressive outfit modelled by Sophia Davies (Year 8).

The School also did well in the Sculpture Trail competition. The Senior School won their section for the second year running with their Performing Paper Pachyderm.

The sculpture was conceived by Technology teacher Mrs Christine Potter and constructed by all the members of form groups 8B and 8C. The elephant was made of recycled newspaper, cardboard boxes, sweet wrappers, Christmas crackers and sawdust and looked in keeping with the surroundings in the window of the carpet shop.

Mrs Monica Carruthers, Head of Art, said “The sculpture was created in a remarkably short, but creative timescale.”

The Junior School also entered the competition. Year 2 had fun building a ‘ball balancing’ seal sculpture made of recycled materials. The Reception and Year 1 classes thought up good ‘seal names’ and the winner was pulled out of a hat in assembly; he was christened Flipper.

Year 2 teacher, Mrs Riddle, said “Flipper proudly sat on display in a beautiful garden on the High Street. Unfortunately he was not awarded a prize but he has got over his disappointment and is hoping to make a guest appearance on our school stand at The South of England Agricultural Show in June!”
