A team of Hockey players from Burgess Hill School for Girls took Canada by storm by winning five of their seven Burgess Hillmatches during a Sports tour to Vancouver.

The squad of sixteen Senior School students flew to Canada over the school Easter holiday for two weeks and played Hockey against school teams in Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

They had their first match against Little Flower Academy playing in the glorious sunshine, kick-starting the tour with an 8-0 win. Their second match was against West Vancouver Hockey team where the girls played solidly, showing their slick passes and skills to pick up a second victory.

The following day the Burgess Hill team played their third match against South Delta Secondary School and pulled out another brilliant performance for their third win.

On Vancouver Island the girls played and won against one of the Island’s best teams, Shawnigan Lake School. At Duncan Hockey Club, Burgess Hill played against the Duncan Blue team. They maintained their winning streak and finished with another victory.

The girls’ sixth match was against Duncan Red who, following their defeat the day before, bought out a stronger side. With five matches in less than two weeks, the girls were starting to feel the fatigue and lost to a stronger Duncan side. Nevertheless, they battled the torrential rain and heavy legs to fight hard and put on a strong performance throughout.

At the University of Victoria Burgess Hill played their final match against their toughest opposition yet. Despite a brilliant performance from the Burgess Hill girls, the side proved too strong and the girls were defeated.

The team stayed in Downtown Vancouver, Whistler and the town of Tsawwassen. As well as playing Hockey, the girls also took part in three days of skiing in Whistler. They also did some sightseeing which included, Downtown Vancouver, Grouse Mountain to view the Capilano Bridge; Stanley Park, where the girls enjoyed a tandem bike ride around the coast, a Hippo tour, Shannon Falls, and the Canadian Canucks vs. Colorado Avalanche Ice Hockey game at the Rogers Arena.

Burgess Hill student Freya Loughton, 17, said “The whole two weeks were filled to the brim with the most amazing activities, sights and matches, allowing us to gain a true taste of Vancouver as well as mingle with local people who were all so friendly and welcoming. The trip was simply phenomenal!”
