Three teachers, Mrs Miller, Mrs Pearson and Mrs Riddle dressed in RAF and ATS uniforms to make the assembly memorable for the girls.

The School observed the national two minutes of silence and Year 6 teacher, Mrs Smith, read an extract from the poem ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ before the ‘Last Post’ music was played to the pupils.

The girls recognised the special date this year and learnt why Armistice Day is always on the 11th November. They also learnt why the poppy is used as a symbol of remembrance.

Year 2 also spent the morning looking at real RAF medals, owned by Mrs Riddle’s Father. Mrs Riddle said, “The girls looked at these and handled them, asking questions about how they were used and what for.”

The School will also be represented on Remembrance Sunday at St John’s Church by Mr Bond, the school’s new Bursar, who will lay a wreath. Mr Bond served in the Royal Air Force before joining Burgess Hill School in August.
