Burgess Hill School for Girls at CAE training centreStudents were asked to design a brochure for the global aviation company CAE, as part of a careers conference at Burgess Hill School for Girls. The winners of the challenge have won a one hour flight on a full flight simulator.

The design brief was given to Year 10 students from Burgess Hill School for Girls and Downlands Community College in Hassocks. They were asked to produce a four-page publication about careers at CAE in one day on Friday 29th June.

A group of girls worked as journalists for the day and were taken to the CAE Training Centre in Burgess Hill. They were able to view the flight simulators and ask questions about the company from Helen Freeman, Senior Sales Manager for Business Aviation. The students worked in teams and took part in workshops on graphic design, held by Nathan Stride, Managing Director of local design company Stride Creative.

The guest speaker for the event was GB rower and Olympic 2012 torch bearer, Rachel Smith. Rachel holds 25 medals for Dragon Boat Racing and a Guiness World Record for being part of the fastest women’s pair to row across the Atlantic. She carried the Olympic torch through Chester in May after being nominated for her fundraising for Breast Cancer Care and her work with the Prince’s Trust. Rachel’s experiences inspired the students to consider their career opportunities and future aspirations.

The judges for the challenge were Nathan Stride, Rachel Smith, Sabina Kelleher, Lead Instructor on the Falcon 900 EX EASy aircraft at CAE and Judith Edey, Head of Careers at Burgess Hill School.
