A group of school girls from Burgess Hill School for Girls took part in the nationwide ‘Big Tidy Up’ on Monday 3rd October to keep their school playground and field free from litter.

The dedicated team were members of the Junior School’s Eco Committee. They wore their ‘Big Tidy Up’ bibs and used litter pickers to collect any rubbish they found around the Junior School.

The girls, who are aged eight to eleven, found the school grounds were relatively tidy as the school has already achieved the Bronze and Silver ‘Eco Schools’ Awards, but they managed to collect some rubbish which had blown onto the school field.

The Big Tidy up is a nationwide scheme run by Keep Britain Tidy, a national environmental charity which campaigns to the public in order to change behaviour and improve our local environment. Since September 2008, over ten thousand bags of rubbish have been collected by volunteers registered on the scheme.

The Junior School took part in the ‘Big Tidy Up’ as part of their ‘Girls Go Green’ week, in which all the Junior School pupils are taking part in eco activities. This week the girls will have a green dressing up day to raise money for the Eco charity Cool-Earth (www.coolearth.org), they will have assemblies presented by South East Water, Better Tomorrows and Simply Free Solar, and an Eco fashion challenge and fashion show. Girls Go Green week is also a national week followed by Schools affiliated with the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA).
