Cheltenham Ladies College Chemistry DayScores of pupils from preparatory, primary and senior schools enjoyed a day of explosive science demonstrations and fascinating lectures this week, as they joined the girls at Cheltenham Ladies’ College for a Chemistry Conference.

To begin the conference, GCSE and Sixth Form pupils from CLC and surrounding schools, were invited listen to talks sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), not only about the curriculum but also exciting new developments in science and research.

The guest speakers included top scientists, Mr Tim Harrison, talking about the Chemistry of Fragrances and Miss Abi Coveney speaking on Nanochemistry: Sugars, drugs and nanoholes, both from the University of Bristol, and Mr Nick Barker from the University of Warwick, giving a talk entitled Give Me Strength, about the chemistry of energy sources.

The afternoon saw pupils from primary and preparatory schools, including students from Hopelands, Berkhampstead, Airthrie, Chandlings Manor and Dormer House, attend an explosive Chemistry demonstration Gases of the Air from scientist and RSC Teacher Fellow Mr Tim Harrison.

Many of the students watched in awe, as the demonstrations investigated the chemistry behind the gases we breathe, the conversions between states of matter, and what is and is not a chemical reaction, as well as looking at fire and how man has manipulated it to his own advantage, with some with explosive results.

Matt Gill, Head of Chemistry at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, said: “The conference provided an inspiring opportunity for students from across the region to learn about some cutting edge Chemistry.”
