Science at Cheltenham Ladies CollegeMaha Haqqani, who is now studying at John Hopkins University in America, completed the article for her Extended Project Qualification at College shortly before she left College in 2010.

The Extended Project Qualification, introduced in 2008, has been offered to girls in their final year of College to help prepare them for university. Girls are given free choice of which topic area to research or practical projects, such as film making, to complete; the only stipulation is that none of the work covered must have been explored in curriculum lessons.

Catherine Lygoe, Extended Project Qualification Co-ordinator at The Cheltenham Ladies’ College says, “The EPQ seems to be a qualification that the universities really value. Many of our Oxbridge candidates this year were asked to talk about their EPQs and we believe that this really added value to their applications. Maha’s achievement really proves the value of completing the EPQ”.

Mrs Lygoe goes on to say, “Our students have the opportunity to look at an area of personal interest in some depth; they learn to manage their time, and research in a way which mirrors the way they will need to work at university. Projects have ranged from ‘The effects of the illegal addition of melamine to food products on individuals and society’ to ‘Do the women in the comedies of Aristophanes provide an accurate representation of contemporary Athenian women?’ The only limit to the range of areas to explore is the students’ imagination”.
