Chess Girls Reach Final of Sussex Championships

Burgess Hill school for girls chess team successThe Burgess Hill School for Girls’ Under 14 chess team were delighted to play in the Sussex final of the Junior Chess Inter-Schools Chess Championships at Great Walstead School.

The team played two matches in the final of the Championships, winning the first and narrowly losing out in the second. Team captain, Hannah Watkinson, did particularly well as she won both her matches in the final.

Burgess Hill School were awarded a trophy for second place in the Butler Plate and Lauren Merry was awarded a prize for winning all her matches in the qualifying rounds. The other two team members were Eliza McHugh and Katie Lane.

Lauren said “I really enjoyed playing in this competition and meeting the teams from different schools. We would like to thank Mrs Woroniecki for giving us this opportunity”.

A record number of thirteen teams entered the tournament, with young players from the Sussex and England teams. The teams playing for the Butler Plate were Bishop Bell, Burgess Hill School for Girls, Handcross Park, and The Angmering school.
