In January, at the beginning of lockdown, I wanted to find a way that members of the Wind, Brass and Percussion faculty could all feel connected and motivated through music. Playing and recording to a backing track, making it as rhythmically strict as possible, is fun but can be tricky. It is also a useful skill for musicians to learn.

It has been astonishing to see the huge support for this project from both the visiting music teachers and students. Nineteen girls sent in videos and, in total, 34 pupils from across the Wind, Brass and Percussion faculty sent in audio files to be included in the recording of ‘Defying Gravity’ from the Broadway musical Wicked.

Taking part in this project has been very rewarding for everyone involved. The opportunity to play with a group of like-minded, dedicated musicians is a lot of fun and has significant benefits for pupil wellbeing and confidence.

Thank you to everyone who took part and to Mr Mckormack for creating a video to accompany the recording, which can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/TT8-SHyyeaQ
