Following several wins at the Maidstone Music Festival in late November, Cobham Hall is delighted to hear that one pupil has been given the additional accolade of having been invited back next year to participate in the Maidstone Young Musician Competition.

Last weekend, a number of pupils took part in the Maidstone Music Festival, competing in the piano and vocal categories. Emily, Year 13, Lucy, Year 11, and Jessica, Year 8, all won their respective age categories, with performance including Rachmaninoff’s ‘Ostrovok’, Schonberg & Boubil’s ‘Empty Chairs at Empty Tables’, and Bart’s ‘Who Will Buy’, from Oliver. Pianist Joey also won her category, playing Haydn.

Following her success, and having impressed judges immensely, Lucy has since been invited to take part in the Maidstone Young Musician Competition.

The opportunity to perform and get feedback from established professional musicians is vital for young performers who are still dealing with mastering the techniques of their instrument, but also performance nerves.

Penny Clements, Head of Music , explained: “What performers hear in their own heads, and what they think they are or aren’t doing, isn’t always necessarily what an audience hears. This is why recording yourself, and critically listening back, is so important to assess what is going right and what still needs tidying up or emphasising more.”
