tennis champion culfordCulford Prep School pupil and tennis scholar Edward Pomeroy, age 13, has become U14 Boys’ Singles champion in the IAPS National Prep School Tennis Championships. The hotly contested national competition took place on 15-17 July at Queenswood School, Hertfordshire, with over 300 competitors from 35 schools taking part.

Pomeroy, who lives in Culford village, played well throughout the tournament and defeated players from Millfield School and St Hugh’s Prep, among others, to win the title. Pomeroy also competed in the U14 Doubles tournament with Tommy Freeman, but the pair were knocked out in the semi-finals.

Culford’s Director of Tennis David Hall commented “I am delighted for Edward. He played superbly throughout the tournament and his win was fully deserved.”

Mention must also be made of Lowenna Clarke and Tilly Blasdale (both age 12) who were runners-up in the final of the U14 Girls’ Doubles, losing to a pair from Millfield School. Both girls played well throughout the competition and will no doubt take confidence from reaching a National Final. Tilly Blasdale also reached the semi-finals of the U14 Girls’ Singles.

Culford offers tennis scholarships from age 10, enabling pupils to combine a tailored programme of tennis coaching with a full-time education through to A Level.
