Persian_NewYear_sibford_schoolPupils at Sibford School near Banbury got an insight into Persian culture this week when they joined students from Iran to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year.

The school is currently home to seven Iranian students who shared with their UK class mates the tradition of Haft-Sin … the ceremonial New Year table setting that features seven items, all starting with the letter ‘S’, to represent rebirth, affluence, love, medicine, health and beauty, sunrise and age and patience.

Hooman Chahian explained that back in Iran, people would now be enjoying a 13-day holiday, which would culminate in Sizdahbedar, an outdoor feast of food and drink.

However, in a share of cultures, the Iranian students will be delaying their holiday celebrations until next month … when school finishes for the Easter break.
