Second Form pupil, Robert Herrett, from Dauntsey’s, has won the Gold Prize for Secondary school entries in the recently launched The Week Junior’s Letter To The Editor competition.  Robert was one of more than 1,700 pupils from across the UK who entered the competition which challenged them to write a letter to the Editor on a topical issue.

Anna Bassi, Editor, The Week Junior said:Robert and The Week

“I thoroughly enjoyed reading Robert’s letter.  It was a direct, clear and balanced response to our story on the demand for a tax on sugar.  By writing about his own experience he added another dimension to the argument and I was particularly impressed by his conclusion that ‘individuals must take responsibility for themselves’.”

As the Gold Prize winner, Robert’s letter will be published in The Week Junior and Dauntsey’s will receive a journalism workshop for Robert’s class and a year’s subscription to The Week Junior.

Demelza Hills, Head of Complementary Curriculum, Dauntsey’s said:

“The English curriculum is – quite rightly – encouraging pupils to read more widely than the traditional fictional titles.  Newspapers like The Week Junior are a great way of getting pupils to read non-literary texts and build their understanding of the wider world.  We encouraged pupils to enter this competition as part of our Complementary Curriculum lessons and are thrilled that Robert has been so successful.”
