Dollar Academy Combined Cadet ForceDollar Academy CCF were called to attention on 10th October with their biennial inspection, this year conducted by Squadron Leader Bob Lander from RAF Leuchars.

A total of 220 pupils took part in the march and drill, before presenting for inspection outside the front of the school’s magnificent Playfair design building. The cadet force is inspected every two years, which is an opportunity for ensure standards are kept high. At Dollar, this also provides occasion to celebrate the prominent role CCF has within the school.

Dollar has one of the biggest Combined Cadet Forces in Scotland. Approximately one third of the pupils in the entire Senior school are members so this is a major activity at Dollar with considerable resource and staff support. There is the opportunity for pupils to be involved across all services: the Navy, RAF and Army, with the option to specialise in Signals, Infantry and REME.

CCF allows school children to be involved in the functions of the Armed Forces in the UK, and provides them with an understanding of the need for their existence. Pupils have the opportunity to experience power and sailboats, gliders and powered aircraft, mountain work, sub aqua, parachuting and, of course, shooting – where several Dollar pupils have gone on to compete internationally. These activities develop skills, discipline and leadership.

Recent successes for the Dollar CCF include first and second placement at the Scottish Military skills competition on the 1st-2nd October, and an outstanding performance at Sandhurst on the 15th October where Dollar Academy CCF First Aid team were crowned overall champions. The highest individual score was achieved by Form IV pupil Robert Henson.

Dollar Academy CCF also led the school’s wreath laying ceremony and Remembrance Parade on Sunday 13th November.

Commenting, Capt Mark Scott, Dollar Academy Combined Cadet Force Contingent Executive Officer said: “CCF is a very popular activity within the school and we are very proud of our pupils’ achievements in this area. This is a non-compulsory activity at Dollar Academy and children are invited to join from Form II. The enthusiasm they show in participation and their ability to present themselves in competition is quite outstanding. “
