The IAPS Tournament was held at Wellington College, Berkshire from the 25th-27th March. Wycliffe Prep School Wycliffe Collegeentered two pupils Josh Owen, Year 8 boarder from Solihull and Nathan Mead, a local Year 6 pupil from Stonehouse into the National Tournament.

For Jonny Harford, Director of Squash at Wycliffe College since 2011, this was the first time he had entered players to compete in this prestigious competition.

The last time the College was represented was back in 2009, when Lyell Fuller, who is now a Year 12 pupil, was still at the Preparatory School.

Lyell is currently ranked 3rd in the U19s and was recently part of the winning England team at the Europeans.

The Director of Squash said, “I had high hopes for both Nathan and Josh. However, because of Nathan’s age it was more about gaining experience from competing at such a high level and building on his previous successes. For Josh, as an U13 player who had previously reached number four in England, this was his opportunity to prove himself.”

He went on to say, “The first two days went by without any real tests for the Wycliffe players and it was clear that it was going to be between ourselves and St Peters School in Exeter for the titles.

Unfortunately, Nathan lost in the semi-finals and went on to finish 4th. but this was an outstanding result bearing in mind his age. I feel confident that he will win this competition at some point in the future.

Josh displayed great skill and maturity when he faced future Wycliffian and semi-final opponent, Jack Newey, and he deservedly earned a place in the final.

Josh went on to win the final and was named National Prep Schools’ Champion. However, there was little time to celebrate, as Josh needed to team up with Nathan for the doubles. They defeated all in their path to gain the title of IAPS Doubles Champions. I am looking forward to seeing them develop through the College and to future successes.

”The Headmaster, Adrian Palmer said; “Both boys have much to be proud of and have represented their school with pride. They demonstrated perfectly what it is to be a Wycliffian and I am delighted at their achievement.”
