IMG_2811This summer has been a double celebration for Year 12 Mayfield pupil Regina Lai. Not only did she secure four A’s in her AS exams she was also awarded second prize in the Law Essay Competition run by Newham College, Cambridge.

Regina, who took exams this summer in Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Religious Studies, wrote an essay in response to the question “Should we positively discriminate when appointing Justices to the UK Supreme Court?” The short version on her answer was no!

She was invited to a ceremony in Cambridge in June, where she received her prize of £200 from Professor Dame Carol Black, President of Newnham College, she enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and had the chance to chat to the current principle and its alumni.

Reflecting on her fantastic achievement Regina said: “Frankly, never have I been that happy before. I really couldn’t have ever pictured myself being this blessed. This would not have happened without the encouragement of all of my teachers.”

Head of Sixth Form at Mayfield School, Mr Filkin, added: “Regina did a great deal of research, including visiting the courts in her home city of Hong Kong and wrote a brilliant, closely-argued essay. We are very proud of her achievement.”
