Epsom College Rugby players Learning new tricks for television

A group of College L6th form rugby players had stars in their eyes when they took part in the filming of an episode epsom college rugby BBC1 new tricksof the popular BBC1 drama New Tricks shortly before half term.

New Tricks follows the work of the fictional Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS) of the Metropolitan Police.

The 15 boys were invited by Old Epsomian, Alex Kaye-Besley, who is an Assistant Director on the programme, to act as extras in some rugby scenes filmed for the 10th series.

The filming took place in Battersea Park and involved the boys setting off at 6am for a 7.15am start.

Following a cooked breakfast in a mobile catering van, they were called to the field in bitterly cold, muddy conditions with snow falling.

The scenes involved them playing rugby alongside actors Keith Ramsay and Denis Lawson. Keith took part in some of the rugby scenes and admitted to being slightly anxious after watching the ability of College players as he had not played much rugby at school.

"After a couple of hours, and many takes, we completed our job. The boys were excellent and received much praise and thanks from all involved with the project," said College sports coach, Neil Taylor, who accompanied the group.
