The soirée season was kicked off by White House on Wednesday with a spectacular evening of dining and Epsom College white house soireeentertainment in Big School.

In keeping with the international make-up of the House, the theme for the event, chosen by the girls, was All Around the World and was reflected in the evening's menu.

Nic Liew, Emma Vartevanian, Sophie Middleton and Amna Abdulsalam devised an international spread, which started with Caribbean punch and Russian kompot, a fruit cocktail made to a recipe provided by Anastasia Babich, Kristina Porubaeva, Anastasia Usacheva and Nastia Matveeva.

The theme continued with starters of melted French camembert with olive oil vinegar and crusty bread, and Epsom College soireetraditional Chinese dim sum.

The main course was a buffet of British roast chicken, stuffing balls, pigs in blankets and vegetarian Mexican chilli, accompanied by Nigerian jollof rice and Russian olivier salad.

For desert there was Malaysian iced kachang and French apple tart and cream, with Colombian coffee and Belgian mints to finish.

Led by Housemistress Céline Winmill, the evening's entertainment took the form of a karaoke, with prizes awarded to the House's biggest toast-eater, worse bed-maker and latest to come to roll. A special award for the brightest nail varnish went to House tutor Rachael Storey.

Tutor Ken Siviter recited a monologue, Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson, to great acclaim, while Head of Art, Katie Lenham joined the girls as they danced away to a video of the well-known Gangnam Style song by Psy.

There followed a number of dance acts, a cup song duet performed by Libby Da Silva and Ellie Wilkes, videos that showed the girls' editing expertise, while pianists, Wenli Teh and Natalie Chu, and singers, Jing Teng Yong, Regine Yan and Toni Okuboyejo, performed a beautifully harmonised Malaysian love song and Beyoncé's Love on Top.

The girls also performed the House part song, Girl Put Your Records On.

"Absolutely everybody, as per tradition, contributed towards making the night a great success. Special thanks go to Rob Anderson, who initiated the girls in the functioning of the technical side of Big School, the catering staff, who took the new and unknown recipes in their stride, and the porters, who managed to bring a very precious marimba to Big School without damage and built the stage to our requirements," said Céline Winmill.
