A group of U6th form Design Technology students sampled a taste of life in the fast lane on Wednesday when they Epsom Collegevisited the home of specialist sports car manufacturer Caterham Cars.

Based in Caterham, Surrey, Caterham Cars, now owned by OE and College Governor Tony Fernandes, was originally a Lotus 7 dealer but purchased the rights to manufacture the iconic design, now designated Caterham 7, in 1973.

This was the U6th DT group's final trip before their A level exams and they were not disappointed. They watched Caterham 7 cars being assembled and quickly came to the conclusion that not only are they well designed, exciting and exceptionally good fun, but they are also assembled to a very high standard.

The group was particularly impressed by the variety of combinations available, from specific materials and engine sizes to seats moulded to the owners' requirements, which reflected the theory they have been studying this year.

The group then went on to watch the assembly of the new Caterham SP/300.R, a track-only car developed as a Epsom Collegejoint project with Lola Cars, which gave them the opportunity to get up close and curious with a genuine racing car.

"For those looking towards a career in engineering, the possibilities in motor sport are obvious. All the people we met were very passionate about the cars, extremely knowledgeable and more than willing to pass on their experience," said Head of DT, Abi Wickham, who accompanied the group.
