As part of the new School Development Plan (2013-2015), the Board of Governors has approved a £1.3M investment Epsom Collegeprogramme that will result in a major upgrade of the facilities and accommodation in four of the College Houses.

The work, which will take place over the summer, will see the Newsom Building, currently the home of the boys' day Houses Carr and Propert, transformed into a modern, homely boarding House, which will be occupied by Granville House from next September.

Carr and Propert in turn will move, respectively, to the redesigned, restructured and refurbished second and third floors of the main College building, which are currently the home of Granville.

Carr and Propert will benefit in terms of the number of smaller studies and designated social and recreational areas that will be created.

The move will also allow extra space to be given over to Robinson House, which is located directly behind the Newsom Building.

The decision to proceed with this major investment results from an extensive period of consultation that included staff and parent questionnaires and pupil interviews conducted as part of a review of the College by RSAcademics.

Among the major findings to emerge from this exercise was the fact that while girls' House accommodation is of a high standard, there is scope to improve boys' accommodation.

Part of the rationale behind the move is also that Main Hall and the Dining Hall in the main College building are in use on many evenings when concerts, plays, talks, society and other cultural events are held. The constant flow of people and noise generated by enthusiastic audiences do not naturally complement the orderly, regular rhythm required for a large boys' boarding House just a few feet above these public gatherings.

In addition to the enhanced accommodation, the restructuring will create a further 12 boarding and 12 day places across the three Houses, as well as suitable accommodation for the new Matrons to assist the intended strategic growth of the College.

The video above shows a 3D animation of the planned accommodation in the new Carr House, prepared by NVB Architects, the company instructed to undertake this important work. A selection of images of the upgraded facilities can also be seen here.

The Board of Governors and the College's senior management believe these changes will enhance the quality of House accommodation for all pupils concerned and the move will strengthen the College's overall position in the independent school sector.
