Reflecting the growing popularity of the College's annual Prep Schools' Strings Day, some 130 young Epsom College string daymusicians from 10 local schools performed as an orchestra on Tuesday in front of a packed audience in Big School.

The highly successful event, now in its fourth year, was hosted by Director of Music, Graeme Lodge, and brought together strings players of all abilities from beginner to Grade 7 for a day of rehearsals, culminating in a concert for parents, teachers and guests.

During the morning, the pupils from Years 3-6 rehearsed in Big School, playing a variety of string instruments from violin and viola to cello and double bass.

Practising with fellow musicians from different schools under the direction of College music master, Ian Holiday, proved highly beneficial. For many of the young performers, this was the first time they had played in such a large orchestra.

Following lunch in Main Hall with their teachers, the children were treated to a concert given by Epsom College students Charles Ashie, Philip Fiuza, Sebastian Lim and Christian Lim, who showcased their talents on the violin.

Afternoon tea for parents and guests in Main Hall followed before the youngsters showed what they had learnt during the day with their own performance.

Headmaster, Jay Piggot, welcomed parents, teachers and guests, who were impressed by the high standard of the concert as the children played music from a wide ranging repertoire, including The Sleeping Beauty Waltz, The Magic Carpet Ride from Harry Potter, With a Hundred Pipes, Habanera from Carmen and the James Bond Theme.

Schools attending this year were Broomwood Hall, Cumnor House, Danes Hill, Feltonfleet, Homefield, Northcote Lodge, Papplewick, Priory, St Andrew's Woking and Willington.
