IMG_3259This term, we celebrated a milestone of Cobham Hall gardener Mr Keith Waters.  Having been with the School for just over 40 years – currently the School’s longest serving member of staff – Keith was awarded a certificate and medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in recognition of 40 years’ service to horticulture.

Speaking after receiving the award, Keith said, “It’s lovely to be acknowledged like this. When I joined Cobham Hall, much of the grounds had been neglected.  The Dairy at the back of South Lawn wasn’t visible.  It was hidden by undergrowth and unmanaged trees; West Court was the same, as were other parts of the grounds.  It’s been wonderful to be part of a team that has helped recover these areas so that they can be enjoyed.  It’s been fantastic seeing the improvement, and so I’m proud to have received this award.”

Although starting the job with no gardening qualifications, Keith had a background in farming.  He joined the team following a recommendation from his Uncle-in-Law, who at the time was Head Gardener.

When asked if he had a favourite part of the 150 acre site, Keith said, “No. It’s all impressive for different reasons, and in different seasons.  But I do love when you come down the drive and there’s a mist hanging across the lawns, or when you see young deer walking along the edge of the lawn.”

Congratulations, Keith and thank you from all at Cobham Hall.
