A pair of twins from Felsted School have achieved exceptional marks in their Grade 5 cello exams.

Charles Fenton Tun was awarded the Trinity Exhibitioner’s Award for achieving the highest mark in the UK with a score of 99 out of 100, placing him the top category of young musicians for his age. His brother Frederick also excelled and achieved a remarkable score of 97 out of 100.

The boys started learning the cello as part of the Felsted Strings initiative which allows every child to learn an instrument for the year. They have since progressed to Grade 7 in just three years, earning distinctions in every exam.

Emma Fenton Tun, the twins’ mother, commented: “We are very proud of what both boys have achieved and look forward to watching them develop. I think it was the combination of head of music, Mr Rees’ enthusiasm as well as their excellent teacher, Charles Ellis, who ignited the spark in both Charles and Frederick. Felsted have been amazingly flexible in their approach to timetabling lessons and supporting the boys’ interests.”

Owen Rees, head of music at Felsted Prep, commented: “We are very proud of the boys’ musical achievements as they have worked so hard to reach this level at their age. We must also congratulate Mr Ellis for his dedication to teaching Charles and Frederick, and encouraging so many young cellists at Felsted. It is brilliant that our other pupils can be inspired by hearing the boys play regularly at school.”
