A pupil at Felsted Prep School has been shortlisted for the South East England Finals of the Young Engineers Competition.

Amrit T, 11, was highly commended for her Leaders Award entry.

A number of budding engineers from Felsted entered the competition, answering the question ‘If you were an engineer, what would you do?’. Amrit was inspired by her dislike of injections, leading her to create a concept called the ‘Injecto-plaster’, an inventive way of receiving an immunisation without the need of injections.

The ‘Injecto plaster’ is designed to hold medicine within the plaster which would be absorbed by the body slowly over a few minutes. The plaster would also change colour, to indicate when all of the medicine had been absorbed.

She commented: “I don’t like injections and because it also takes valuable time to administer them, my invention benefits both medical staff and their patients. I really hope to be able to make these plasters a reality one day!”

Amrit has also considered the environment in her project, specifying that the plasters would be biodegradable.

Felsted is committed to engaging pupils with STEM subjects from the youngest years and Felsted pupils have had a number of regional and national successes in science and engineering competitions in recent years, including pupils reaching the Big Bang National Finals for seven years in a row and winning several National awards for their entries. The school is also one of Metropolis Education’s ‘Leaders in Science’, and you can read more about their science provision here.
