Former Leighton Park pupil scoops Best Female Solo Artist at Brits

Laura Marling, who studied GCSEs and A-levels at the Reading Quaker School Leighton Park, has scooped herself the title of best Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards.

Laura Marling, who studied GCSEs and A-levels at Leighton ParkDuring her time at the School, Laura gained herself a music scholarship when she was in Year 8. By the time Laura had reached Year 10, her talent had certainly been spotted within the School and she was asked to write and perform a song for BBC Radio 4. By the age of 16, Laura had started playing gigs around Berkshire.

Rosemary Scales, Director of Music at Leighton Park said: ‘During her Music Scholarship audition, Laura played one of the songs that she had written at the age of 13, which was just amazing. Her father introduced her to folk music, she was so receptive to the music anyway. Her fathers record collection was an inspiration to Laura.’

Alex McGrath, Head, added: ‘I did not personally know Laura as she left the school before my time here. However, her name regularly crops up in our busy and thriving music department. Music is a true strength of Leighton Park, and the commitment of staff to developing pupils’ talent is exceptional. They are particularly proud of Laura’s achievements.’

When Laura plays the audience are drawn into her music. Her natural shyness on stage is part of her charm, quiet and understated, she leaves the audience fascinated.
