A group of boys from Gordon’s School have received an award for their fundraising efforts for the health charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Members from the school’s Khartoum House accepted Surrey Superstars Youth Fundraising Award from the HM The Queen’s representative in the county, the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey Michael More-Molyneux, at a reception in Guildford.

The award represented two years of hard work and fundraising for a worthy cause, contributing to the legacy of their fellow student, Luke Towers, who sadly passed away following a cardiac arrest in January 2016. They were determined to do something to help prevent similar tragedies in the future deciding to fundraise for CRY which offers support, research, screening and awareness into cardiac risk into young, sudden cardiac death. They raised a total of £1,800 through bake sales, raffles and quiz nights, with one pupil, David Hutchings, running a marathon.

Alex Duke, a Sixth Former at Gordon’s School, accepted the award and said that the loss of Luke was tough for the house, but that they have “come out of this with unity for a good cause”. He also praised the Paul King, head of house, and house staff members William Keates and Katrione Young, adding that “they have worked so hard to preserve Luke’s legacy”.
