A York pupil has won a place at Harvard University.

18-year-old Adam Janes, currently in his final year at St Peter’s School, York, will follow a general liberal arts programme in his first year at Harvard before specialising. Adam hopes to major in Economics.

Harvard is regularly named as the world’s top university, and attracts students from more than 80 countries.

Adam, who is currently studying Maths, Politics and Economics at A-Level, started in reception at Clifton Pre-preparatory School, the pre-prep for St Peter’s, at age 4.

“Studying at Harvard will provide me with a great cultural experience, and introduce me to lots of new ideas,” said Adam. “It is also a university that will enable me to continue with my rowing, which is something I’ve developed over several years at St Peter’s.”

Penny Bollands, Head of Careers & Higher Education at St Peter’s, said: “Applying to an international university is a very different process to applying somewhere in the UK. I’m very pleased that we have been able to give Adam the support he needed in pursuing a place at Harvard – this is a fantastic opportunity for him, and I am confident Adam will make the most of it.”

Harvard receives around 35,000 applications each year, of which only around 2,000 are successful. Adam is due to start at Harvard in late August.

In addition to Adam’s place at Harvard, seven other pupils from St Peter’s School have secured offers from Oxford and Cambridge for entry this autumn. These include Vicky Zhang (Mathematics, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford); Victoria Barrett (Mathematics & Philosophy, St Catherine’s, Oxford); Alex Akehurst (Classics, Balliol, Oxford); Hettie Cust (Land Economy, St Catharine’s, Cambridge); Victoria Herrenschmidt (Classics: Greek & Latin, Jesus, Cambridge); George Hourston (Medicine, Gonville & Caius, Cambridge); and Jamie MacNab (Natural Sciences, Robinson, Cambridge).

Leo Winkley, Head Master of St Peter’s School, said: “To gain entry to some of the best universities in the world, pupils must not only achieve academically, but demonstrate the flair, resilience and drive that are the cornerstones of success. I congratulate our pupils on their offers, and I am delighted that the community at St Peter’s School has been able to support them in achieving their ambitions.”

The application process for other universities is yet to be completed. In the past, around half of St Peter’s pupils have progressed to the prestigious Russell Group universities.
