Northbourne Park Preparatory Boarding School History WeekNorthbourne Park’s reputation for creative exploration through regular themed weeks gathered momentum again during the last half of term with pupils creatively exploring all things historical, questioning the importance and relevance of History in our curriculum, exploring our own cultural heritage and examining how the past is relevant to our present and future.

During the week, the children engaged enthusiastically in a wide number of wonderful kinaesthetic activities, which brought History to life before their very eyes. They created their own family trees, handled artefacts which were explained by Year 8 pupils, our musicians played period music during lunch, Year 5 baked cakes for a Victorian bakeoff, raising £133 for Barnados. The children listened to a visiting medievalist, putting on chain mail armour and stamping their own coins; Year 6 went on an archaeological dig in our own grounds and enjoyed Strictly Come Medieval Dancing. Year 4 presented an assembly on the Egyptians in a wonderful interactive ‘Horrible Histories’ style drama presentation with songs and poems. Mrs Wray worked at the School in the Second World War and told tales of her experiences first-hand, Year 7 presented a wonderful ballad on 1066 having visited Battle earlier in half term and History Week drew to a close with a human timeline which stretched across our lawns with all of our pupils involved.

This is the kind of creative and exciting learning which stimulates the children and is a hallmark of all that we do at Northbourne Park. It encourages all of our pupils to use all of their senses to learn, to explore and to create.
