Loretto pupils Hong Kong Barbarians RugbyCELEBRATING sporting achievement at Loretto School in Edinburgh is quite the norm, but for two boarding pupils their 2012 New Year’s Day was something to remember. Both were selected to represent their respective age groups in one of the world’s most prestigious Rugby tournaments in their home country of Hong Kong.

Loretto School pupils, Philip Wong (18) and Wesley Yip (15) represented the Hong Kong Barbarian teams at the 45th Standard Chartered Youth Rugby Tournament at the famous Hong Kong Football Club.

The Loretto duo was selected to play against the Hong Kong National Youth Rugby Teams on New Year’s Day in front a crowd of thousands. Competition for selection for the Barbarian Teams is notoriously tough, with Philip and Wesley playing alongside overseas boarders from other famous rugby schools such as Harrow and Millfield.

Both Philip and Wesley are boarders at Loretto and both represent school teams, with Philip captaining the Loretto 2nd XV.

“Wesley and I are delighted, honoured and proud to be selected for the Overseas Barbarian Teams. It was a memorable experience playing in front of so many spectators” said Philip.

Jonathan Hewat, Loretto’s Director of External Affairs, added, “This is a tremendous achievement for Philip and Wesley. To be selected for the Overseas Barbarians is no mean feat. Competition is fierce. Both boys regularly pull on their Loretto Rugby jerseys to represent their school, and are both are excellent ambassadors for Loretto. We do congratulate them on their achievement.”
