A TEAM OF FOUR pupils from Bromsgrove School have beaten off strong competition to reach the National Final of an investment competition. The team of Chris Dodd, Matt Drane, Lewis Martins and Max Thorpe took part in a tough set of rounds testing their financial capability, business studies and economics knowledge and emerged from the regional final as winners with the highest score of all the regional finals that have taken place.

Rod McKee, Vice Principal at the ifs School of Finance said: “The performance of the Bromsgrove School team in share trading and particularly the regional final was first class, making over £16,000 in three months and attaining one of the highest ever scores in the regional finals. I believe this kind of experience in investment and personal finance will help teach students the importance of making informed, well educated decisions about personal finance which in the future they will all need to make”.

Team member Lewis Martins commented on their performance: “We started as complete amateurs and ended up experienced investors. The ifs Student Investor Challenge has been a great opportunity to learn the ropes (and to “lose money safely”!). Our success? Nothing more than patience, research and extensive preparation.”

The team now go forward to the National Final to be held in London on April 28th where they will compete against seven other regional finalists for the chance to win an all expenses paid trip to New York and £2000 for the School.

The ifs competition gives students the opportunity to invest virtual money on the stock exchange and to experience the fast moving world of share dealing and investment. Over 7400 teams entered this year’s competition; to reach the National final is a major achievement.
