Burgess Hill School for Girls Maths ChampionsBurgess Hill School for Girls have received their best results for four years in the National Mathematics Competition.

Seventy-nine girls from Years 9, 10 and 11 were entered for the initial competition which began in February and between them they achieved an excellent 8 gold, 21 silver and 23 bronze certificates.

The best performers from the first round of the competition qualified for the more advanced competitions.

Julia Zhuang, Year 11, achieved more than 99 points in the first round and qualified for the prestigious Maclaurin International Olympiad, a two hour mathematics examination. She was given the ‘Best in School’ award and achieved a Gold Certificate and prize.

Ellie Warner, Year 10, also achieved over 99 points and qualified for another prestigious competition; the Hamilton International Olympiad. She received a Gold certificate and prize.

Ashley Ma and Shannon Gunawardana, both in Year 10, qualified for the European Pink Kangaroo competition with Gold certificates and prizes and Sally Emerson and Eliza McHugh, both in Year 9, qualified for entry into the European Grey Kangaroo competition with Gold and Silver certificates and prizes.

Head of Mathematics, Mrs Lynn Woroniecki, commented on the results, “A fantastic achievement for all these girls, and a new record for the school.”

Year 10: Hayley Buchanan; Charlotte Hopkinson and Yuxi Zhao.

Silver Certificates:
Year 11: Kirstie Chan; Natalie Choi; Emily Coles; Eleanor De; Katarina Graham and Joyce Yu.
Year 10: Chloe Au; Maggie Chen; Fiona Cheung; Olivia Garry; Lauren Hibbert; Amy Huyton-Taylor; Eleanor Mackenzie and Lily Williams.
Year 9: Katie Cooke; Emma Crofts; Harriet Jenner; Lauren Merry; Holly Tasker and Faith Wilder.

Bronze Certificates:
Year 11: Abigail Barnes; Chloe Houlihan; Peony Chan; Mandy Cheng; Eleanor Prail; Avalon Ridler; Karis So; Wing Tang; Kitty Taylor; Bethan Williams; Toma Xin and Mandy Yau.
Year 10: Ishbel Amyatt-Leir; Rebecca Fry; Chloe Ip; Sophie Rees and Tabitha Reynolds.
Year 9: Ally Faughnan; Hannah McLennan; Chloe Miller; Heather Tam; Yoyo Tam and Florence Williams.
