Wycliffe Prep School pupil Kally Goring surprised her family when she decided to cut off her hair and donate it to the Little Princess Trust.

The 12-year-old from Coaley had 10 inches of her long hair cut off. It will be used by the charity to make a wig for a little girl who has lost her own hair through illness.

She also raised £150 in sponsorship for two animal charities – the Blue Cross and WWF.

The Year 8 pupil did the charity hair cut as part of Wycliffe’s annual Kirby Challenge which asks pupils to complete an activity that benefits the community or school.

“Having short hair feels different and my family didn’t think I would go through with it,” said Kally.

“It will grow back and it’s good to do something for charity. I raised money for two animal charities too because I’m big on animals.”

Mum,  Sue Goring said: “It was completely her idea. I thought she would change her mind but she is quite determined with certain things.

“When I see her amongst her peers they all look very similar with long hair and ponytails, it’s like a uniform, so it’s a big thing to do. She’s growing it straight back out but she might do it again one day. I’m really proud of her.”

Wycliffe teacher,  Mr Guest said: “The ‘Kirby Challenge’ award was developed to prepare Year 8 pupils at Wycliffe Preparatory School for the transition to the Senior School.

“The award is named after former teacher and housemaster, Roger Kirby, who taught at Wycliffe for over three decades.

“Mr Kirby is renowned for his adventurous spirit and community work and idea of the Kirby Challenge is to encourage Year 8 to become leaders, challenge themselves physically and mentally and take pride in becoming an asset to their communities.”
