Last week, Kelly College’s annual Theme Week took over as pupils and staff raised money for charity. Kelly College Charity Theme week

This year, a Children’s Stories theme was adopted and a range of activities, events and visitors were scheduled, making it one of the busiest weeks in the college’s calendar.

Pupils and staff decorated the college to reflect tales of witchcraft, wizardry and adventure and some of the most extravagant decorations could be seen in the pupils’ boarding houses.

Single stories were chosen to be represented and among these included ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and ‘Snow White’.

The Houses were fundraising for their House charities; this ensured that the week was both a collective effort by the college, and a strong individual endeavour from each of the House members. It also made sure that funds raised would be spread across a broad spectrum of causes.

Among the charities supported by the week were both national and local organizations including the RSPCA, Kelly College Charity Theme weekBreast Cancer Care, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Help for Heroes, Devon Air Ambulance, Jeremiah’s Journey, CLIC Sargent and Give Well.

One highlight of the week was a visit by Leigh Jauncey from the Devon Bird of Prey Centre.

Leigh brought with him a Barn Owl and a Siberian Eagle Owl which fit seamlessly into the college’s 18th Century architecture and added an extra dimension to the decorations that clad the halls. Other visitors included the Fudge-tastic sweet shop of Tavistock.

This homage to Roald Dahl’s classic tale caused quite a stir one break time when a stall was set up in the college’s library.

The pupils were heavily involved in the week and encouraged to express both their creativity and energy to raise awareness and funds for their chosen causes. Their efforts included a photography exhibition, a cake stall and a day of fancy dress.

A number of activities arranged by staff also filled the week. These included the Goldilocks and the Three Bears Three Legged Race, a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and a themed assembly in which, much to the delight of pupils, Headmaster Dr Graham Hawley made a special appearance as Dumbledore.

Everyone at Kelly College would like to thank all those who helped make the week a success. This includes the staff and pupils, who tirelessly decorated, organized and devoted so much of their energy to the events, and The Devon Bird of Prey Centre and the Fudge-tastic sweet shop who both added extra character and energy to a fantastic week.
