4th and 5th Form artists recently travelled to London to visit the V&A and the Tate Modern.Kelly College London Galleries

The trip tied in with the pupils’ current projects and provided valuable inspiration for their upcoming Exam Units. Currently, 5th Form pupils are exploring a ‘Force’ theme, while those in the 4th Form are investigating artistic principles and ideas deriving from the circus.

Both themes have challenged pupils to push their creativity, so some extra inspiration was unanimously welcomed by pupils.

The first stop was the V&A; this proved very popular among the art scholars. They took particular interest in the photography exhibition, ‘Light from the Middle East’. This work, which had a range of documentary style pictures and digitally manipulated compositions, encouraged much discussion and questioning.

Pupils also visited the architecture, costume and jewellery areas, adding to their experience and knowledge of arts and crafts from around the world.

Pupils sketched and took notes throughout, which have since been researched and will later be used in classwork.

Having toured the V&A, pupils headed to the South Bank to visit the Tate Modern. Here, they observed the new Roy Lichtenstein exhibition.

This retrospective of his iconic life’s work was very popular among the pupils who created a sketchbook of detailed studies, exploring his use of strong lines and bold primary colours. The Tate Modern provided a mass of inspiration; the magnitude of the building itself was a crowd pleaser.
