Our most recent music event, the Summer Serenade, provided a wonderfully varied musical evening and Kelly Collegedemonstrated a wealth of musical talent across our year groups.

The concert opened with a medley of familiar Beatles’ songs sung by the Senior Choir, followed by some equally well-loved classics, such as The Blue Danube Waltz and Pomp and Circumstance, played by the College Orchestra.

Fourth Form pupil Billy Allen capably made his conducting debut and Chantal Whitfield led the orchestra.

Next was the Waltz for 4 Hands, which was composed and played by GCSE pupil Bertie Jayarajah, with Director of Music, Andrew Wilson providing the other 2 hands.

Again, performing her own composition, Fifth Form pupil Sophie Whitfield sung a beautiful Song Without Words, with the flowing melody alternating between the piano and voice.

Sophie was then joined by her sister Chantal, and the talented girls skilfully sung the intricately weaving parts of Vivaldi’s Laudamus Te.

Pianist Freddie Shere continued the concert with the Dussek Rondo, followed by the technically challenging Finzi Fughetta adeptly performed by Ciara Glossop.

The mood then changed considerably as our Jazz Band swung into action with some jazz classics from some of the finest jazz composers, including Fats Waller’s Mighty Fine and Sy Oliver’s Opus One.

Our Junior Choir took to the stage next with a lovely performance and beautifully sung harmonies in Castle on a Cloud by Shonberg.

This was followed by Fifth Form pupil Elizabeth Barnes skilfully playing Mozart’s lilting Andante in C on the flute and Chantal Whitfield’s charming rendition of Britten’s cabaret song, Johnny.

Forces were joined for the finale of the evening; Andrew Wilson’s Daedalus and Icarus, which he composed for this year’s Tavistock Music and Arts Festival, and was first performed as part of Tavistock Sings!

The choir and orchestra were joined by soloists Ian Hardy, Mark Perry and pupil soloists Sophie Whitfield and Richard Bennett and Mary Mazur Park on the Piano.
