The culmination of a recent English project saw 1st Form pupils make the short trip to Kelly College Preparatory Kelly College Pupils Delight Nursery with Children’s Storiesschool to hold a reading at the Nursery.

Throughout the project, 1st Form English pupils were required to join forces with the Geography department and make their own versions of the book ‘The Jolly Postman’.

The event tied in with this year’s Children’s Stories Theme Week and provided the challenging task of not only analysis, research and storytelling, but also presentation and public speaking.

In English, pupils read the original version, paying careful attention to language features and the variety of inserts within the story. With the story analysed, pupils tried to define why young children find the book so appealing. They then wrote their own ‘Devon-based’ versions, using fairy-tale characters.

To ensure their adapted versions resembled the original, they made letters, postcards, invitations, telegrams and advertisements to include as inserts. One group went as far as to take photographs of themselves dressed up as the characters to form the pictures for the story.

Once the stories had been drafted, Geography took over. They looked at maps and explored different routes, place names, and the geology of the local landscape in order to know which mode of transport would be suit their postman.

The class even visited some of the places to get a feel for the landscape and add authenticity to their tales.

The final books were taken to the Nursery where the groups’ stories were joyfully received by their target audience.
