Boxing star Luke Rhodes has landed a place at one of the country’s leading universities after recording a knockout set of A Level results.

The 18-year-old pupil at Mount St Mary’s College, in Derbyshire, achieved three straight As in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Welterweight Luke, from Maltby, in Rotherham, will now go on to study Chemical Engineering at The University of Newcastle.

Luke, a Yorkshire and Humberside, and Midlands Champion, has taken time out from boxing in over the last 12 months to concentrate on his A Levels.

The former Rudston School head boy also took Spanish up to AS level earning and achieved nine GCSE A* grades and one A.

He said: “Having worked so hard, I’m really happy with these results and it is fantastic that I have got a place at Newcastle. I’m really grateful to the teachers at the Mount who have really helped and supported me to balance both boxing and my education.

“I hope to continue boxing while at university and then hopefully use my language skills to travel the world.”

The Spinkhill school achieved record-breaking A Level results for the fourth year running. A* grades are up on 2010, the first year in which they were awarded nationally, with 27 per cent of pupils securing A* and A grades, while 47 per cent achieved A* – B grades.

Laurence McKell, Headmaster at Mount St Mary’s, said: “Congratulations to Luke and all of our pupils on a truly outstanding set of A Level results. We are incredibly proud of the students for the hard work they have put in and the excellent attitude they have shown to study and learning.

“Credit must also go to our talented and dedicated team of staff for the support they have shown preparing and guiding pupils over the last two years. Although we are a non-selective school, these results demonstrate how we continue to achieve high standards and help pupils to fulfil their potential.”
