The Lancing College production of Coram Boy, which has just taken place, was directed by Matt Smith, Head of Drama, with musical adaptations by Neil Cox, Director of Chapel Music at the school. This ambitious enterprise played to a packed house each night. It was most enthusiastically received, with highly professional performances across the board.
Coram Boy is based on the award-winning novel by Jamila Gavin. The story follows Aaron, the deserted son of the heir to the Ashbrook Estate; and Toby, a young boy saved from an African slave ship. It was premiered on the National Theatre’s Olivier Stage in November 2005; and the music includes adaptations of Handel’s Messiah, as well as original songs, period-style dance, and chamber music.
The Lancing College production was the culmination of several months of work: students were trained in choreography and stage combat, as well as in acting and singing. The magnificent costumes came from Harvey’s of Hove, and the ‘props’ were provided by the National Theatre.
