Two pupils and a teacher at Lancing College have recently enjoyed regional hockey success.

Sixth Formers Mabel Woodley and Michael Laurent have been recognised and commended for their performances for Brighton and Hove Hockey Club (BHHC).

Michael was named as the Men’s Young Player of the Season and said: “I’m extremely grateful for the award as I was up against stiff opposition. I’m delighted that my performances this year have been recognised.”

Mabel recently played for Brighton and Hove’s Ladies 1st team in the county final against Horsham and commented: “Unfortunately we didn’t win, however competing for the club alongside experienced players has really helped me develop and push myself.”

Joe Naughalty, the college’s director of hockey, has been voted the National League Conference East Player of the Season, following a long scoring streak for Brighton and Hove.

He said: “I am extremely proud to be receiving this award, having scored 25 goals in 18 league matches. This complements my recent appointment as Brighton and Hove’s assistant coach, which is an exciting new challenge.”

Discussing Mr Naughalty’s coaching ability, Michael said: “Under the guidance of Mr Naughalty I have significantly improved as a player; he has helped me assess the game better and developed my confidence on and off the pitch.”

Mr Naughalty commented: “It is great to see Lancing pupils benefiting from the links we have with BHHC. I see a growing number of pupils from the College and Lancing prep schools at BHHC training sessions and matches, and I hope this excellent relationship can continue to grow.”
