Llandovery College hosts Wales’s first UR7s Academy

The three day non-residential camp is open to schoolboys aged 13-18 from all over Wales and is aimed at enhancing Llandovery Collegeyoung players’ rugby education through quality practical coaching.

Wales 7s star and Rugby World Cup 7s winner, Richie Pugh, will be the Academy’s Head Coach and will be supported by other Wales 7s stars.

Among the many areas for focus over the three days are:

• Rugby core skills work
• In-game rugby 7s tactics and team skill development
• Personal physical development including speed, strength and power work
• Nutritional and supplement advice
• Meet and spend time with best players and coaches in the country
• How 7s can improve your 15s game

UR7s Regional Manager, Huw Warren, said the Academy, which runs from Wednesday May 29th to Friday May 31st, 10am to 4pm, will include practical rugby sessions and classroom sessions on how to prepare for tournaments. Parents are invited to watch the sessions in the afternoons and receive feedback from the coaches.

“At the end of the three days, students will go away with a developed knowledge of the game, full gym training programmes and nutritional guidelines to guarantee the best preparation for rugby 7s as well as some great stash and an experience working with some of the best players and coaches in the world,” he said.

“During the summer, UR7s will be selecting an Academy team to compete in tournaments at all age groups including Brighton and Harlow 7s.”

Llandovery College is a fitting location for the UR7s Academy. Steeped in a sporting tradition, the College has a reputation for producing quality International rugby players including Alun Wyn Jones and George North who are currently in this summer’s British Lions squad.

Another former College boy, James Merriman, was part of the Wales 7s team that won the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

The cost of the Academy is £200 (U18 Academy) or £150 (U15 Academy) per pupil.
