Pupils at Llandovery College showed they were game to sample something new when they tucked into a feast of Llandovery College eat bigPheasant Breast and Game Pie as part of the Countryside Alliance’s ‘Game to Eat’ month.

School chef Matty Thomas and Catering Manager Jayne Davies presented a game supper option to pupils of all ages who then tucked in to a hearty pie and delicately cooked pheasant wrapped in bacon and served with a white sauce and a selection of vegetables.

Sampling Game for the very first time, College pupils sat down to a whole new experience and made the most of the opportunity to ask questions to the Director for Wales for the Countryside Alliance, Rachel Evans.

Rachel Evans said: “This was a great opportunity provided for the pupils by the staff of Llandovery College. I was more than happy chatting to the students about the background to shooting, its contribution to the value of £73 million to the rural economy in Wales and the nutritional values of the various game meats.

“We also chatted about the versatility of game, how most dishes can be adapted to include game and that it was important to appreciate the stewardship of the countryside behind their supper. The winner I think was the game pie, full to the brim with wild boar, duck, pheasant and venison in a rich gravy and pastry topping.”

I am definitely going to do more events like this for next year’s Game to Eat Month and am excited about the possibilities already. I am confident that Llandovery College have provided us with a blue print for next year and thank them very much indeed for their forward thinking and co-operation.”

Llandovery College Catering Manager Jayne Davies said “This is something different for the pupils and it has broadened their food experiences. We are delighted to take part in Game-to-Eat month”.

Whilst the very first Game to Eat Month has been completed, the majority of game is still readily available so take a hold of your taste buds and go wild with British game. Recipes can be downloaded from www.gametoeat.co.uk
