Two Llandovery College pupils are continuing the school’s historic Oxbridge tradition by being offered places at   Llandovery College OxbridgeOxford and Cambridge.

Olwen Wilson and Chris Williams were overjoyed to hear they have been provisionally accepted at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge (formerly New Hall College) and University College Oxford respectively.

Olwen, from Tirabad near Llandovery, joined the College Prep School in Year 6 and is the current head girl; she has been offered a place at Cambridge to read Natural Science (Biological).

Chris, from Swansea, who joined Llandovery College in Year 12 from Ysgol Cwm Tawe, has received an offer to read Mathematics at Oxford.

Chris’s teachers at Llandovery College say his passion for Maths is unparalleled and his success is no surprise. Headmaster Guy Ayling said: “Chris’s outstanding capabilities in the field of Mathematics, coupled with a work ethic that is second to none, have resulted in well-deserved recognition. Well done!”

Chris, who plays rugby for the Llandovery College 1st XV, admits this is true. “I just love Maths, love the logic of it, how you start with something unknown and follow the logical steps to come out with a correct answer.”

Olwen, who is a key team player in the 1st XI Hockey team, hopes eventually to work in scientific tissue research.

Sian Collins, UCAS Co-ordinator and herself a former Llandovery College pupil and Oxford graduate, said she has been impressed with the way Olwen and Chris had managed their UCAS applications.

“Coupled with the demands of their studies and the preparation for their chosen universities, they have done exceptionally well and we are all very proud,” she said.
